Vatadahosahalli Lake, also known as Sabbanahalli Lake, is a quiet spot in Chikkaballapur in Karnataka, about 100 kilometres from Bengaluru. The lake is in a small village and gives peace to nature fans, photo lovers, road trip lovers, and anyone who wants to leave the busy city. Made in 1888 and filled by rain, it spreads over 117 hectares and helps keep rainwater in the North Pinakini river area. The lake is close to hills, rocky spots, and farm fields, making a pretty sight that looks great at sunrise and sunset. A grand view is the Sri Narasimhaswami Hill far away, seen in the lake’s calm waters. These clear waters are perfect for taking pictures, mainly of nature and landscapes. Bike riders and road trippers from Bengaluru have come to love this lake a lot. On a typical weekend, they might start at the lake in the morning light, then drive through Gudibande and Bhairasagara Lake. The roads to the lake are pretty and clean, though a bit narrow in spots, which makes the trip fun and charming. Even with no shops, the lake’s simple outdoor setting is good for fun. Folks often bring mats, food, and drinks to hang out by the water in the morning or evening. The sides of the lake are good for walking and sitting, while the quiet place is right for deep thoughts or nice talks. Some brave people even swim, but with no set swim area or lifeguards, it's key to be careful.
A small temple, Sri Gangamma Gudi, nearby adds a touch of spirit, mixing the beauty of nature with culture. The lake remains clear and quiet as it steers clear of heavy tourism. People who live there and come often say the lake is calm and clean, and they ask others to keep it that way too. The best times to see the lake are early morning from 5 AM to 9 AM or late afternoon from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM when the light is soft and pretty. It’s wise to skip midday in summer because there’s not much shade. Bring your water, food, and things you need, and follow a strong “leave no trace” rule to keep the lake looking good for others in the future. At its heart, Vatadahosahalli Lake is a great weekend place near Bengaluru, with great views, quiet corners, and a nice escape from daily life. Good for nature fans, bikers, or just folks wanting to chill and unwind, this peaceful lake is a top spot to visit and enjoy.
Gudibande Fort: About 20 km from Vatadahosahalli Lake, you find Gudibande Fort. Built in the 17th century by Byre Gowda, this hill fort shows off wide views of the land around. At the top, there’s an old rainwater system and a Shiva temple. A short walk up leads to stunning views great for those who love thrills and old tales.
Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple: Near the bottom of Nandi Hills, about 45 km away, sits this old temple from the 9th century for Lord Shiva. Known for fine work in stone and a calm feel, it’s a top spot for those into Karnataka’s deep past.
Nandi Hills: About 50 km from the lake, Nandi Hills draws many with its misty air, cool feel, and beautiful sunrises. The top has spots like Tipu’s Drop, Nandi Temple, and paths for walking. It’s a good choice for a day out after the lake.
Skandagiri (Kalavara Durga): Some 40 km from Vatadahosahalli, Skandagiri pulls night trekkers. Its paths lead through the clouds at dawn, giving a rare feel. The walk, a bit tough, ends with old ruins and amazing sun views.
Chikkaballapur Town: Only 25 km off, Chikkaballapur is a busy stop for food or things you need. It’s full of temples and local shops showing rural life in Karnataka.
Avani Betta: Around 70 km from the lake, Avani is a rocky hill, known as the birthplace of Lava and Kusha (sons of Lord Rama). With old temples and rocks, it’s a good spot for short hikes and soothing visits.
Antharagange: At about 80 km off, Antharagange is loved for its caves, springs, and rocky formations. It’s a hit spot for trekkers, especially for night treks enjoyed by the young and brave.
Winter (November to February): The cold months are the best to visit. With nice, mild days, you can stay out longer without heat or burns. It’s great for picnics, photos, and group rides. The clear skies make the place look even better.
Post-Monsoon (September to October): After the rains, the lake and its land look rich and alive. The water’s high, and everything’s green and bright. This time is good for those wanting the lake at its prettiest, with birds and nature all awake.
Avoid Midday in Summer (March to June): The lake is always open, but try not to go in the hot summer noon. From late March to early June, it can get too hot, with strong sun and little shade by the lake. If going in summer, choose early morning or late evening.
By Road (From Bengaluru – About 100 km): The lake is easy to reach by road, a break from Bengaluru. Drive or ride via NH 44 (Bellary Road) to Chikkaballapur, then to Gudibande, and follow signs to Sabbanahalli. This takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on cars, with pretty views near the lake.
By Two-Wheeler (Ideal for Bikers): A lot of bikers from around Bengaluru head here for morning rides. Roads are mostly smooth, and it feels fresh if you start early. Be careful on narrow village roads, more so in rain or dawn.
By Public Transport: Getting there by bus or other public means isn’t easy. Take a KSRTC bus to Chikkaballapur or Gudibande from Bengaluru. Then, maybe a local auto or shared cab to Sabbanahalli. You might need to walk the last bit, so public transport might not be the best way to go.
