Gulabi Kantha Trek is a scenic Himalayan trail located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India, near Hanuman Chatti. Sitting at an altitude of around 12,000 ft, this trek offers stunning views of the Bandarpoonch, Shivalik, and Dhauladhar ranges. It's a hidden gem, ideal for nature lovers seeking a peaceful yet adventurous experience away from crowded trails.
The Gulabi Kantha Trek is considered an easy to moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners with a basic fitness level. The trail isn’t technically challenging, but does include steady climbs and cold temperatures. Prior trekking experience isn't mandatory, but some physical preparation, like regular walks and light cardio, is highly recommended to enjoy the journey comfortably.
The best time to embark on the Gulabi Kantha Trek is between May to mid-July and September to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the trail is rich with alpine meadows, wildflowers, and clear skies. Monsoon and peak winter seasons are best avoided due to slippery trails or heavy snow conditions, which can limit access.
Mobile network availability is limited on the Gulabi Kantha Trek. You'll likely lose signal once you leave Hanuman Chatti. It's best to inform your loved ones in advance. Some trekkers occasionally catch BSNL or Jio signals in higher altitudes, but it's very spotty. Enjoy the digital detox—it adds to the magic of being in the mountains.
The weather on the Gulabi Kantha Trek can be unpredictable. Days are generally pleasant with temperatures around 10–15°C, while nights can drop to 0°C or below. Carry layered clothing to adapt easily. Expect chilly winds, especially at higher altitudes. It's always a good idea to check the forecast before departure for sudden changes in conditions.
Gulabi Kantha is part of a biodiverse region. You'll see lush alpine meadows, wild orchids, rhododendrons, and dense deodar forests. Wildlife is shy but includes Himalayan monals, barking deer, and foxes. Though rare, trekkers have also spotted eagles circling overhead. Remember to respect the natural habitat—observe without disturbing, and leave no trace behind.
Yes! The trek begins at Hanuman Chatti, a small village with deep mythological and spiritual roots. Locals are warm and welcoming, and you may even witness small village rituals or folk stories. This trek is a beautiful blend of natural serenity and cultural richness, allowing you to connect not just with nature, but with local traditions too.
During the trek, you’ll be served wholesome, vegetarian meals prepared fresh by the support team. Expect comforting dishes like dal-rice, chapati, sabzi, soup, and hot tea. Snacks like energy bars and biscuits are also provided. The meals are simple yet nutritious to keep your energy levels high throughout the day. Special dietary needs can be accommodated on request.
Accommodation during the Gulabi Kantha Trek includes tents and sleeping bags provided by the organizers. These are pitched at scenic campsites along the trail. Tents are shared (usually 2-3 people), and sleeping arrangements are cozy with foam mats and warm sleeping bags. There are no permanent shelters, so you’ll be truly sleeping under the stars—literally.
Physical preparation is key. Start 3–4 weeks before your trek with brisk walking or jogging for at least 30 minutes a day. Add bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges for leg strength. Climbing stairs with a backpack helps too. The fitter you are, the more you'll enjoy the trek without feeling fatigued or missing out on the views.
Pack layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, good trekking shoes, a headlamp, personal toiletries, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Include any personal medication and light snacks. A small backpack for daily use is useful. Don’t forget your camera or phone to capture the surreal beauty! Keep it light—every extra kilo feels double at high altitudes.

The Gulabi Kantha Trek is a hidden trail in Uttarakhand, lying in the Garhwal Himalayas at about 12,100 feet high. Known for its pure fields, full blooms, and snow-filled lands, this trek is the right mix of wild looks and fun. The name Gulabi Kantha means "Pink Ridge," taken from the bright pink glow the meadow gives off at dawn and dusk, plus many red rhododendrons that bloom in spring, colouring the whole valley in red and pink. The trek starts at Hanuman Chatti, a tiny place near Yamunotri, and goes up through thick woods of oak, pine, and deodar before it opens up into wide grasslands. As you go up, you see wide views of huge Himalayan peaks like Bandarpoonch, Kalindi Sirkala, Shivalik ranges, and Black Peak. In the cold months, Gulabi Kantha turns into a snowland, good for those who like trekking in snow. Unlike many big treks, Gulabi Kantha is not too full, letting trekkers enjoy quiet and pure Himalayan charm. The trek is seen as medium in how hard it is, good for newbies wanting a first Himalayan trip and old trekkers looking for a calm spot. Sleeping in the fields under a sky full of stars is a magical part of the trek. With its untouched looks, wide views, and the rich culture of nearby towns, the Gulabi Kantha Trek is a secret jewel in Uttarakhand, offering a great Himalayan break.
Gulabi Kantha Trek's past is deep in the rich culture and spirit of Uttarakhand, often called Devbhoomi, the "Land of the Gods." This place has been part of old trade ways, holy trips, and local tales for ages. The start point, Hanuman Chatti, is a mythic spot as it is said that Lord Hanuman took rest here while bringing the Sanjeevani herb to help Lakshmana in the Ramayana. This makes the way full of spirit and adds to the trek. Gulabi Kantha, though not as famous as other places, has been loved by locals for a long time. The name comes from "Gulabi" for pink, named for the many pink rhododendrons and the red light in the fields at some parts of the day. For years, locals and shepherds used these fields for their cows, and old tales tell of the land as a holy spot by the gods.
The area near Yamunotri, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, adds to its value. Travellers tell of hidden valleys and fields full of godly power. It is said that old wise men meditated here, looking for their spirit’s peace in these quiet Himalayas. For years, Gulabi Kantha stayed unknown due to its remote location and no real paths. It was mostly locals, shepherds, and traders who crossed these fields. Lately, with more people loving trekking and caring for nature in Uttarakhand, Gulabi Kantha is getting loved by those who seek real natural beauty. Even now, as it gets known, Gulabi Kantha keeps its old look, thanks to not many shops and local people working to keep the land as it is. Thus, the history of Gulabi Kantha mixes myth, local ways, and its new spot on the trekking map of India. It remains a calm Himalayan field, full of stories of gods, shepherds, and travellers, and keeps a forever tie between nature and spirit.
Yamunotri Temple: Just 14 km from Hanuman Chatti, the Yamunotri Temple is a holy site for Char Dham pilgrims, focusing on Goddess Yamuna. Snow peaks and warm springs are all around this spot, drawing many each year. Trekkers on their way to Gulabi Kantha find this place special for its mix of culture and spirit in the high mountains.
Hanuman Chatti: This small village is where the trek to Gulabi Kantha starts and has deep roots in history. It's said that Lord Hanuman took rest here while on his quest in the Ramayana. Forests, streams, and sweet homes make up the scene, making it a great first stop.
Janki Chatti: About 8 km from Hanuman Chatti, Janki Chatti is loved for its hot water springs. Many stop here on the way to Yamunotri to soak in the waters, said to heal. This spot gives trekkers a nice chance to chill and rest up.
Barkot: Around 40 km from Hanuman Chatti, Barkot sits by the Yamuna River. With apple farms, field steps, and awesome mountain views, it's a top spot for those going to Yamunotri or Gulabi Kantha.
Dodital Lake: Nearby is Dodital Lake, up high at about 3,024 meters. With woods of pine and oak, this spot is thought to be where Lord Ganesha was born. Those trekking love to see both Dodital's quiet waters and the wide mountain views at Gulabi Kantha.
Summer (April to June): Summer is great for this trek. The fields bloom with bright flowers, making the land look wild with colour. The cool days, between 10°C to 20°C, make walking nice. Clear skies let you see mountains far away.
Monsoon (July to September): Rain falls hard in these months, making paths slick and tough to walk. Still, the land looks rich and full of life. It's not the best time for walking because of landslides, but the beauty is strong for those who seek calm and wild sights. Only if you know what you're doing, try to trek then.
Autumn (October to November): Autumn is the top pick for this trek. The skies after the rains are so clear, and the land still holds its green look. The air is sharp and cool. With good weather and stunning sights, this is when many choose to trek.
Winter (December to March): In winter, the place turns into a snowland. Under thick white snow, it becomes magic for those who like snow treks. Big cold, from -5°C to 10°C, means you must dress well. This time brings a rare kind of beauty, but it is tough.
By Airport: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 180 km from Hanuman Chatti, is the nearest airport. Flights from big cities land here often. From Dehradun, a taxi or a bus can take you to Hanuman Chatti through Rishikesh and Barkot, a trip of about 7–8 hours.
By Railway Station: Dehradun Railway Station, around 170 km away, is the nearest train stop, with good links to big places by train, like the Dehradun Express. From there, you can catch a bus, a jeep, or a taxi to Hanuman Chatti.
By Road: You can also drive to Gulabi Kantha as roads connect Hanuman Chatti to big towns and cities. Buses go from Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Haridwar to Barkot, then to Hanuman Chatti. Or take a car or a jeep. The drive from Rishikesh is about 200 km and takes around 8–9 hours, showing you pretty towns and great mountain sights.
