Blog - KRS Dam: A Quick Guide

The KRS Dam, built over the river Kaveri, is found near Srirangapatna in Mandya, Karnataka, India. It came to life in the early 1900s. It is known for its grand build. It is not just key for water for farms and drink but also a big draw for visitors in the area. The dam is named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, who was the king of Mysore when the work started. Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a top engineer from India, was the main builder of this great dam. Done in 1931, KRS Dam is a proud show of smart thinking and top tech of that time. It is about 8600 feet long and 130 feet high, and it makes a big pool called the Krishnarajasagara Reservoir. This pool is key in giving water to the farms in Mysore and Mandya, and drink water to cities like Mysore and Bengaluru. It greatly upped farm work in the Cauvery valley and is seen as one of the top water works in South India. Besides its use, the KRS Dam is famous for the Brindavan Gardens at its foot. These well-kept gardens pull in lots of visitors, especially at night when the music show at the fountain lights up the place. The neat design, step-like lawns, fancy plants, and light-up fountains make a wonder that many come to see, mainly on weekends and holidays.

The dam gives great views, mainly when the rains fill the pool and water rushes through the gates. Watching the water move is a great sight and fun for visitors. You can also boat there, letting visitors take in the nice view around them. With the calm hills and rushing water of the Cauvery, the place offers numerous opportunities for photos and a peaceful escape from city noise. KRS Dam also has roots in history and culture. It shows the forward-thinking of the Mysore Kingdom in getting modern and managing water well. The nearby town of Srirangapatna, rich in history and once the home of Tipu Sultan, enhances the appeal of a visit to the dam. It's located near Mysore (approximately 18 km), making KRS a great spot for a day out for families, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs. In all, KRS Dam is not just a wonder of engineering but a place of lovely views, culture, and history. It provides water for farms and drinking while also impressing visitors with its beautiful gardens and serene atmosphere. A trip there is a good mix of nature, design, and history, a key spot to see in Karnataka.

Places to See Near KRS Dam

  • Brindavan Gardens: Right below KRS Dam, Brindavan Gardens is a top and well-kept garden in India. Spread wide, it's known for its neat design, big lawns, bright flowers, and music show at the fountain. The show at night is loved by many, offering a bright sight to see. A must for families, couples, and those who like taking photos.

  • Mysore Palace: About 18 km from KRS Dam, Mysore Palace is a grand house and a sign of the rich past of the Wodeyar family. It pulls in many with its royal design, detailed insides, and deep history. It lights up on Sundays and public days, great for an evening trip after KRS.

  • Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary: About 15 km from the dam, this spot is a treat for bird fans and nature lovers. Set by the river Kaveri, it's home to birds that come from far and local, like painted storks and kingfishers. Boating there lets you get near the birds and crocodiles in the quiet waters, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy wildlife.

  • Srirangapatna: Only 14 km away, this town has a lot of history and culture. Once the heart of Tipu Sultan’s place, here you'll find the Ranganathaswamy Temple, Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace, Gumbaz, and the old fort. It's a great stop for those into history and those on a pilgrimage.

  • Chamundi Hill: About 25 km from KRS Dam, this hill holds the famous Chamundeshwari Temple, for the goddess Chamundi. You can climb up 1,000 steps or drive to the top for a wide look at Mysore city. The temple and the big Nandi statue are key spots for faith and culture in the area.

  • St. Philomena's Church: Some 20 km away, in Mysore city, this big church, built in the neo-Gothic style, is one of the biggest in South India. Its tall towers, colored glass windows, and peaceful inside make it a key spot of design and spirit to see on your trip.

  • Balmuri and Yedamuri Falls: Close, just 8–10 km from KRS Dam, these cosy man-made falls come from the dam’s overflow. They are loved for picnics, especially after the rains. It's a fun place for a splash, photos, and snacks in a nice setting.

Best Time to Visit KRS Dam

  • Post-Monsoon (August to October): This is the best time to see KRS Dam. Monsoon rains fill the Krishnarajasagara pool to the top, and they often open the dam gates to let water out, giving us a great view. The area turns deep green, making it look lovely. Brindavan Gardens shines bright too, and the weather stays nice for walks and going outside.

  • Winter (November to February): The cold months bring cool, cosy weather, perfect for walking in Brindavan Gardens, watching the music show at the fountain, and seeing places near like Mysore and Srirangapatna. The air is not wet, and it is from 15°C to 25°C, making it a great time for groups and guests to have a calm and nice trip.

  • Summer (March to May): Summer here can get very hot and dry, with heat sometimes over 35°C. The pool might not have much water, and the gardens might look less bright. Mornings and evenings are a bit cool, but it's still not the best time to go outside. Yet, if you come to Mysore at this time, try to stop by KRS Dam in the early morning or late afternoon.

How to Reach KRS Dam

  • By Road: KRS Dam is easy to get to by road and is near cities like Mysore (18 km) and Bengaluru (143 km). From Mysore, you can go by taxi, bus, or drive through the pretty way via Srirangapatna. KSRTC buses and cars go between Mysore and KRS Dam often. The roads are good, making the trip easy for heads out. You can park near the dam and Brindavan Gardens.

  • By Railway Station: The closest train stop is Mysore Junction (about 19 km), which links well to big cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mangalore, and Hyderabad. From Mysore train station, people can get cabs or local rides to KRS Dam in about 30–40 minutes. Another close stop is Srirangapatna Railway Station, nearer but with fewer trains and links.

  • By Airport: The near airport is Mysore Airport (Mandakalli Airport), about 33 km away, with few local flights mainly from Bengaluru and Chennai. For more or bigger flights, people use Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, about 175 km from KRS Dam. From any airport, one can get taxi or take buses/trains to the spot.

  • By Bus: Buses from KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) and private groups go often from Mysore and Bengaluru to Brindavan Gardens and KRS Dam. These are cheap and easy choices, good for lone heads out or those with not much money. Buses run all day, more often on weekends and holidays.
